- Study cells and cellular anomalies
- Examine human cells for any abnormal and/or diseases
- Play major role in diagnosing a patient
- Using a special technique, they must collect and prepare slides consisting of the cell specimen from the body
- Examine the slides through a microscope
- Mark any changes, abnormalities and the level/stage the disease has reached
- Create and submit report for final evaluation to a pathologist
- Identity changes in the cell that could be a disease so patient can get treatment
- Baccalaureate in any sciences from university/college
- Graduate from accredited cytotechnology program
- Minimum one year of clinical practice required
- Graduates must take a certification exam to become certified CTs

- Hospitals, clinics and laboratories
- With experience, private industries, research and teaching facilities
- Work independently most of the time however if a disease is found, may work closely with a pathologist
- Work with many different types of lab equipment and technology
- As focus and concentration is needed, CTs often are sitting for long periods of time
- Special clothing and protection (gloves, coats, face shields) must be worn to stay safe from cells that may carry contagious diseases and dangerous chemicals
