Dear Ms. Tran
This grade 11 biology course created a solid base of the 4 major concepts of biology which will most definitely help me in the future in order to learn about this field. I have gained knowledge in the genetic unit about DNA, chromosomes and traits that can be passed down along with information about the different systems in the human body and the diseases that are associated with these systems from the internal systems unit. This is relevant and helpful if I decide to pursue a profession in the medical field.
My knowledge in the fields of genetics, evolution, internal systems and biodiversity has definitely increased as I have learned many new things and built an interest in some of the fields. My learning experience in this course has been incredible as I got to experience opportunities that I wouldn’t be able to in my lifetime like the human anatomy trip. Being able to see a cadaver up close and even getting to hold a human heart was an outstanding and rare experience.. On top of all that, seeing real human lungs inflate in front of me was phenomenal. I'm a big fan of a show called Grey’s Anatomy and as they constantly deal with tumors, it was incredible to see and feel the tumours with my own hands. I am extremely thankful for this opportunity which I wouldn’t have gotten if I didn't take this course.
The learning strategies that the course influenced to extend my thinking include hands on learning as we got to do lots of labs. In these labs we got explore different concepts using a variety of tools. This brought me to the realization that I’m more hands on learner rather than just listening and understanding. However I would suggest are that you take notes and pay close attention in class as biology is made up of tiny details and every detail is important to understand the concepts
One improvement that should be made in this course is having more time to review the concepts learned before tests and exams, as well as getting this final summative in the beginning of the semester which will allow the students to have more time and put more effort into the portfolio.
